North America Nebula or United States Nebula? — My Personal Thoughts
Nebulae are usually named based on the shapes they resemble. Most of them actually look surprisingly close to the names they were given. However, among all the nebulae I have photographed so far, there is one whose name still feels slightly questionable to me personally — the North America Nebula. This object is an emission nebula and is known for its enormous size, which is why I had wanted to photograph it long before its imaging season arrived. And after finally capturing it, I can confirm that it really is huge. Even with a wide-field telescope at only 365mm focal length, it still looked quite tight inside the frame. One good thing is that I photographed it only recently. If I had attempted this image when I first started learning astrophotography a couple of months ago, I probably would not have achieved a result like this and would have needed to re-shoot it later. At that time, I still did not fully understand proper binning settings, and I rarely spent more than one or two hours on integration time.
Now, let’s get back to the naming discussion. Although its official name is the North America Nebula, personally I feel that its overall shape resembles the United States of America more than the entire North American continent. From what I have learned, I am not the only one who sees it this way — some people also think it looks more like the USA outline. Of course, its official and common name remains the North America Nebula because the original observers reportedly used the overall outline of the North American continent as their reference. If someone asked me what I think it resembles the most, I would still say the United States of America. The original observers may have noticed faint outlines resembling the Gulf of Mexico, the East Coast, and parts of Central America, which likely led to the name North America Nebula.
However, when I examine it more carefully, the region said to resemble the Gulf of Mexico actually feels more similar to the Great Lakes area. The section often compared to Baja California reminds me more of the Florida Peninsula, while the region considered to resemble Mexico looks surprisingly close to the East Coast instead — at least from my personal perspective.

Nebula တွေရဲ့နာမည်တွေကို အများအားဖြင့် သူတို့ရဲ့ပုံစံ appearance အပေါ်မူတည်ပြီးပေးထားကြတာပါ။ တော်တော်များများကလည်း နာမည်ပေးထားတဲ့အတိုင်း အနီးစပ်ဆုံးတူကြပါတယ်။ ဒါပေမယ့် ကျွန်တော်ရိုက်ဖူးသမျှ nebula တွေထဲမှာတော့ နာမည်နဲ့ပတ်သက်ပြီး နည်းနည်းဘဝင်မကျသေးတဲ့ nebula တစ်ခုရှိနေပါတယ်။ အဲ့ဒါကတော့ North America Nebula ပါပဲခင်ဗျ။ ဒီ object က emission nebula အမျိုးအစားဖြစ်ပြီး အရွယ်အစားတော်တော်ကြီးတယ်လို့သိထားတာကြောင့် သူ့ season မရောက်ခင်ကတည်းက ရိုက်ချင်နေခဲ့တာပါ။ တကယ်ရိုက်ကြည့်တော့လည်း တော်တော်ကြီးပါတယ်ဗျ။ Focal length 365mm ပဲရှိတဲ့ wide view scope နဲ့တောင် frame ထဲမှာ ခပ်ကျပ်ကျပ်လေးဖြစ်နေတုန်းပါပဲ။ တစ်ခုကောင်းသွားတာကတော့ အခုမှရိုက်ဖြစ်တာပါ။ အကယ်၍ astrophotography စလေ့လာခါစ လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့နှစ်လလောက်ကသာ ရိုက်ဖြစ်ခဲ့မယ်ဆိုရင် အခုလိုပုံမျိုးရခဲ့မှာမဟုတ်ပဲ ပြန်ရိုက်ရနိုင်ပါတယ်။ အဲ့တုန်းက binning setting တွေသေချာမသုံးတတ်သေးတာ၊ integration time ကိုလည်း တစ်နာရီ နှစ်နာရီထက်ပိုပြီးမရိုက်ဖြစ်တာတွေရှိခဲ့လို့ပါ။
ကဲ… အခု နာမည်ပေးကင်ပွန်းတပ်တဲ့အပိုင်းကို ပြန်သွားရအောင်ဗျာ။ Official name က North America Nebula ဆိုပေမယ့် ကျွန်တော့်အမြင်မှာတော့ သူ့ shape က North America continent တစ်ခုလုံးထက် United States of America နဲ့ပိုတူနေသလိုခံစားရပါတယ်။ သိရသလောက်တော့ ကျွန်တော်တစ်ယောက်တည်း ဒီလိုမြင်တာမဟုတ်ဘဲ တစ်ချို့လူတွေလည်း USA outline နဲ့ပိုတူတယ်လို့ထင်ကြပါတယ်။ ဒါပေမယ့် official/common name ကတော့ North America Nebula ပဲဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ ဘာကြောင့်လဲဆိုတော့ original observers တွေက continent overall outline ကို reference ယူပြီးနာမည်ပေးခဲ့တာလို့ သိရပါတယ်။ ကျွန်တော့်ကို ဘယ်ဟာနဲ့ပိုတူသလဲလို့မေးလာရင်တော့ United States of America နဲ့ပိုတူတယ်လို့ပဲ ပြောချင်ပါတယ်။ Original observers တွေက Gulf of Mexico, East Coast နဲ့ Central America side တွေရဲ့ faint outline တွေကိုမြင်ခဲ့လို့ North America Nebula လို့နာမည်ပေးခဲ့တာဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။ ဒါပေမယ့် သေချာကြည့်မယ်ဆိုရင် Gulf of Mexico နဲ့တူတယ်ဆိုတဲ့နေရာက Great Lakes region ဘက်နဲ့ပိုဆင်နေသလိုခံစားရပါတယ်။ Baja California နဲ့တူတယ်ဆိုတဲ့နေရာကလည်း Florida Peninsula ဘက်နဲ့ပိုနီးစပ်သလိုခံစားရပြီး Mexico နဲ့တူတယ်ဆိုတဲ့နေရာကလည်း East Coast ဘက်နဲ့တော်တော်ဆင်နေတယ်လို့ထင်မိပါတယ် (ဒါကတော့ ကျွန်တော့် personal opinion သက်သက်ပါခင်ဗျ)။
