Smart Telescope vs Modular Setup — The Thoughts I Had After Gaining Experience
After gaining some experience using different types of telescopes with different structures and functions, I started to have certain thoughts in mind that I wanted to share, which is why I wrote this post. Personally, I first started astrophotography with smart telescopes, but recently I’ve been using modular systems almost exclusively. I only use smart scopes occasionally now, and even then, I mainly use the Vespera Pro, while the Dwarf Mini is mostly just getting recharged these days. The main reason I’ve shifted more toward modular systems is because of the image quality. Another reason is that using a smart scope started to make me feel like the telescope itself was controlling everything for me. Also, with a modular system, there are many preparation steps before taking a photo — such as achieving focus, doing polar alignment, finding the target, setting up auto-guiding, and so on. Since smart telescopes automate all of these things, I started to feel that they were a bit less “professional.” To explain it more clearly, it’s similar to how, in regular photography, someone aiming toward professional photography often loses interest in using auto mode once they become comfortable shooting in manual mode.
And this feeling isn’t unique to me. I’ve realized that many people who switch to professional setups experience the same thing. Some hardcore Astro photographers are even so against smart telescopes that they don’t want to acknowledge them as “real” telescopes. But please don’t misunderstand me and think that just because I’ve gained a little experience, I’m looking down on smart telescopes. I personally accept all types of scopes. Since I myself started learning astrophotography through smart telescopes, I always keep in mind that they are the reason I reached where I am today. It’s just that after gaining some experience, they no longer matched the style I personally wanted to use, so I naturally stopped using them as much.
And honestly, there are also times when the patterns and colors from images taken with smart telescopes look even more beautiful than those from modular setups. So they definitely shouldn’t be underestimated. In summary, what I want to say is that instead of feeling affected by people saying that you can only be called an Astro photographer if you use a modular setup, just focus on what you truly want to do. Whether you use a modular setup or a smart telescope, both are perfectly fine. The most important thing is to consistently enjoy and continue doing what you are passionate about.

တည်ဆောက်ပုံနဲ့လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်ခြင်းကွဲပြားတယ့် Telescope အမျိုးအစားအစုံနဲ့ရိုက်ဖူးတယ့်အတွေ့အကြုံလေးရလာတာနည်းနည်းများလာတော့ စိတ်ထဲမယ်ပြောချင်နေတယ့်အကြောင်းအရာလေးတစ်ခုပေါ်လာလို့ ဒီပိုစ့်လေးကိုရေးဖြစ်ခဲ့တာပါ။ ကျွန်တော့်အနေနဲ့ astrophotography ကိုပထမဦးဆုံး smart telescope တွေနဲ့စပြီးရိုက်ခဲ့တာဖြစ်ပြီး အခုနောက်ပိုင်းတော့တောက်လျှောက် modular system တွေနဲ့ပဲရိုက်ဖြစ်နေခဲ့ပါတယ်။ Smart scope ကိုတော့ တစ်ခါတစ်ရံလောက်ပဲအသုံးပြုဖြစ်တော့ပြီး သုံးဖြစ်ခဲ့ရင်လည်း Vespera Pro ကိုပဲသုံးဖြစ်ကာ Dwarf Mini ကိုတော့ recharge လုပ်တာလောက်ပဲလုပ်ဖြစ်တော့တယ်လေ။ အခုလိုမျိုး modular system ကိုပဲပိုပြီးအသုံးပြုဖြစ်ရတယ့်အဓိကအကြောင်းအရင်းကတော့ image quality ကြောင့်ရယ် နောက်တစ်ချက်ကစိတ်ထဲမယ် smart scope ကိုအသုံးပြုရတာကအရာရာတိုင်းကို scope ကသာ control လုပ်နေတယ်လို့ခံစားမိလာတာလည်းပါတာပေါ့ခင်ဗျ။ နောက်ပြီး modular system နဲ့ပုံတစ်ပုံမရိုက်ခင်ကြိုပြီးပြင်ဆင်ရတယ့် အချက်တွေဖြစ်တယ့် Focus ဖမ်းခြင်း၊ Polar Alignment လုပ်ခြင်း၊ Target ကိုရှာဖွေခြင်း၊ Auto guiding setup လုပ်ခြင်းစတယ့်အချက်တွေကို smart telescope နဲ့ဆိုလုပ်စရာမလိုတော့စိတ်ထဲမယ် professional မဆန်ဘူးလို့မြင်မိတာလည်းပါပါတယ်။ ဒီထက်ပိုပြီးရှင်းအောင်ပြောရမယ်ဆိုရင် regular photography မှာ professional ဖက်ကိုသွားမယ့်သူတစ်ယောက်က manual mode နဲ့ရိုက်တတ်လာတယ့်အချိန်မှာ auto mode ကိုမသုံးချင်တော့တာနဲ့အတူတူပါပဲလို့ဆိုလိုချင်တာပါ။
အဲဒီစိတ်ကကိုယ်တစ်ယောက်ထဲဖြစ်တာလားဆိုတော့မဟုတ်ပါဘူး professional setup ဖက်ကိုပြောင်းတယ့်သူတိုင်းခံစားရတယ့်ခံစားချက်ဆိုတာကိုလည်း သိရှိခဲ့ရပါတယ်။ တစ်ချို့ hardcore Astro photographer တွေဆိုရင် smart telescope တွေကို scope အနေနဲ့တောင်အသိအမှတ်မပြုချင်လောက်အောင်ကို against လုပ်ကြတယ်လို့သိရပါတယ်။ အခုလိုမျိုးပြောလို့ မင်းကနည်းနည်းလေးရိုက်တတ်လာတာနဲ့ပဲ smart telescope တွေကိုအထင်သေးချင်နေပြီလားလို့တော့ မထင်ကြပါနဲ့ခင်ဗျ။ ကျွန်တော်ကတော့ဘယ် scope အမျိုးအစားပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်လက္ခံပါတယ်။ ကျွန်တော့်အနေနဲ့လည်း astrophotography ကို smart telescope တွေနဲ့ပဲစပြီးလေ့လာခဲ့ရတာမို့လို့ အတွေ့အကြုံလေးတစ်ခုရလာတယ့်အချိန်မှာ ကိုယ်သုံးချင်တယ့်ပုံစံနဲ့သိပ်အဆင်မပြေတော့လို့သာ သိပ်အသုံးမပြုဖြစ်တော့တာပဲရှိတာ သူတို့ကြောင့်သာအခုလိုမျိုးအခြေအနေအထိရောက်ခဲ့ရတာပါလားဆိုတယ့်အသိကို စိတ်ထဲမှာအမြဲထည့်ထားပါတယ်ခင်ဗျ။ တစ်ခါတလေ smart telescope နဲ့ရိုက်လို့ရလာတယ့်ပုံတွေရဲ့ pattern နဲ့ color တွေက modular setup ရဲ့ပုံတွေထက်ပိုပြီးလှနေတတ်တာမျိုးတွေလည်းရှိနေတတ်တော့ သူတို့ကိုသွားပြီးအထင်သေးလို့လည်းမရဘူးခင်ဗျ။ အနှစ်ချုပ်အနေနဲ့ပြောချင်တာကတော့ modular setup ကိုသုံးမှ Astro photographer လို့သတ်မှတ်တာကွဆိုတယ့်စကားလုံးတွေကိုလိုက်ပြီးခံစားမနေပဲ ကိုယ်ဘာလုပ်ချင်တာလဲဆိုတယ့်အကြောင်းအရာနောက်ကိုပဲလိုက်ပြီးတော့ modular setup ပဲသုံးသုံး၊ smart telescope ပဲသုံးသုံးအဆင်ပြေတာမို့လို့ အဓိကကတော့ကိုယ်ဝါသနာပါတာကိုတစိုက်မတ်မတ်လုပ်နေရဖို့ကသာ အရေးကြီးဆုံးပါပဲခင်ဗျ.....
